What People Want In A Leader
Have you ever worked for a leader you couldn't help but follow? The first company I began working with after I finished college was managed by a suc a person. I recall one of my peers telling me that Mr. Mills wanted to see me. This person had forewarned me that I was about to be asked to do something I would be strongly against doing.
Several minutes into my meeting, however, I found myself injected with Mr. Mills' infectious enthusiasm, kindness, respect and dignity. As I left his office that day, I was amazed at how a task that before had semed so distasteful now had turned into a challenge I was looking forward to conquering.
People enjoy following a gifted leader. There are many so-called leaders in the workplace who, upon colse examination, have no true, devoted followers. They say that a "leader" who has no followers in reality is just going for a walk-alone. So what makes the difference?
Barna Research Ltd., a company noted for its skill in identifying social trends and practices, in 1997 conducted a poll to determine what people desired in a leader. The top five qualities they looked for were:
- The ability to motivate people to get involved (87%)
- Skill in negotiating a compromise when there is conflict (78%)
- Being able to identify the right course of action to take (77%)
- The capability to make decisions which ultimately are in the best interests of the people, even when those decisions might not be popular (76%)
- Expertise in training and developing other leaders to effectively become engaged in the effort (75%)
The effective leader, however, recognizes that positional authority is meaningless without the wiling and enthusiastic support of the staff.
If you want willing "subjects" (employees or coworkers) following you into battle, remember what it takes to get them there. A trong leader motivates others, negotiates conflicts skillfully, charts a clear course of action, serves in the people's best interest, and develops future leaders. Which of these five areas do you think you need to address this week to become a more effective, more productive leader?
